An ultrasonic homogenizer, also known as a sonicator, is a laboratory device that uses high-frequency sound waves to break down samples into smaller particles or to emulsify liquids. This process, called homogenization, involves creating cavitation (the formation and collapse of microscopic bubbles) within the sample, which generates intense energy and shear forces that disrupt cells and disperse particles.
